Maryland fires head coach Randy Edsall
Randy Edsall is officially out as Maryland head coach.
Three days after multiple reports emerged that Edsall would be let go after Saturday’s game against Ohio State, the university confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon.
“We appreciate Randy’s tireless commitment to the University of Maryland,” athletic director Kevin Anderson said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision, but ultimately this is the best course of action for our football program moving forward.”
The Terps dropped Saturday’s game at Ohio State 49-28 to fall to 2-4 on the season and Edsall stormed out of the postgame press conference after taking exception to a question from a reporter. It was the team’s third consecutive loss, following blowouts at the hands of West Virginia and Michigan. Maryland also suffered an embarrassing 48-27 home loss to Bowling Green in Week 2.
Edsall, who was in his fifth season at Maryland, finishes with a 22-34 overall record, including 10-24 in conference play. Before landing at Maryland, Edsall spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Connecticut.
With Edsall’s dismissal, Anderson announced that offensive coordinator Mike Locksley will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
“Having spent more than a decade with the Maryland football program over the course of his career, I feel Mike is best suited to effectively guide our program through the remainder of the 2015 season,” Anderson said. “Mike has previous head coaching experience and is well-respected both locally and nationally.”
The school also announced that assistant head coach/outside linebackers coach Lyndon Johnson has been “relieved of his coaching duties.” Johnson had been with the program since 2011.
Maryland has a bye this week before resuming play at home against Penn State on Oct. 24.
